PREVIEW: Nintendo 3DS – My Hands-on Experience:

Down a dark alley, round a dubious looking corner in Aldgate, London is where Nintendo held their “invite only” Nintendo 3DS event last weekend and I was one of the lucky ones to get to go inside and witness the future of handheld gaming weeks before anyone else.

Due out on March 25 at approximately £199.99, the Nintendo 3DS is a brand new handheld console successor to the hugely popular Nintendo DS but with major improvements.

Most nostably when you turn the machine is the impressive glasses-free 3D effect which is the key selling point to the system.

It makes your palm gaming feel more immersive and is an incredible feat of engineering which only your eyes can make sense of.

If you get the chance to witness a 3DS in motion, please take the time to have a look, it will blow your mind.

Other significant improvements are the slide pad on the left hand side allowing for full 360 degree of analogue control for the larger, action-oriented videogames.

The slide pad looks similar to the PSP’s analogue nub in design but is far superior in terms of comfort and execution.

It’s good to see Nintendo realising that their patented d-pad design isn’t perfect for every game.

A console is only as good as the games which are appearing on the system and luckily Nintendo seem to be supplying gamers with real, time-consuming experiences which should definitely appeal to the more serious gamer on the move rather than the disposable five minute wonders which appear on Apple’s iTouch devices lately.

On the launch day we can expect a return from the Pilotwings series with Pilotwings Resort, a fans’ favourite from both the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64.

While it seemed a bit like a reskin on Wii Sports Resort I can certainly see a lot of room for Nintendo fan service here and it should definitely be the game to pick up on day one.

Other notable games I played are Super Monkey Ball 3D, Street Fighter 4 3D and Pro Evolution Soccer 3DS which are very competent versions of games we all know and love.

The Nintendo 3DS is certainly an upgrade in terms of graphical prowess against the current Nintendo DS we have sitting on our shelves.

The Nintendo 3DS has a lot of tricks up its sleeve and you really need to see it to believe it.

Sky TV in 3D looked incredible on the portable screen as well as How To Train Your Dragon 3D, a downloadable movie in all its glasses-free 3D glory!

Believe your eyes, indeed!

On day one, new Nintendo 3DS? owners will have plenty of video games to keep them busy. Nintendo and its third-party publishing partners have made sure that people who buy a system on March 27 will be able to choose from a variety of experiences that leverage the system?s new features. A steady and diverse stream of games of all kinds will keep the fun going, with more than 30 Nintendo 3DS games total launching before the E3 Expo in early June.

?Seeing 3D visuals without the need for special glasses is just one aspect of Nintendo 3DS,? said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. ?The real test of any system is whether the games and applications draw you in and keep you engaged. Through the launch window and beyond, Nintendo 3DS delivers.?

On March 27, new Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to choose from the following Nintendo-published games, each available at a suggested retail price of $39.99:

- Pilotwings Resort?, an aerial adventure featuring airplanes, hang gliders and rocket belts. Players soar above tropical Wuhu Island in 3D as they complete missions or snap pictures.
- Steel Diver?, a submarine game that involves strategy and combat. The 3D visuals give players the sensation that they are looking into a miniature aquarium as they control the sub?s speed, depth and pitch, and fire torpedoes.
- nintendogs? + cats, a game that lets players interact with realistic puppies ? and kittens ? in a variety of fun ways. There are three versions of the software, each with different starting breeds: French bulldog, toy poodle and golden retriever. But in each version players can unlock and enjoy more than 20 different breeds.

Other Nintendo 3DS games in the works for 2011 from Nintendo include The Legend of Zelda?: Ocarina of Time? 3D, Star Fox 64? 3D, Kid Icarus?: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart? series.

Third-party publishers also have a strong slate of games ready to go on March 27. These include:

- Super Street Fighter? IV 3D Edition from CAPCOM
- The Sims? 3 from EA
- Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS
- Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
- LEGO? Star Wars? III: The Clone Wars? from LucasArts?
- RIDGE RACER? 3D from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.
- Super Monkey Ball? 3D from SEGA
- BUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSE? from Square-Enix, Inc.
- SAMURAI WARRIORS?: Chronicles from TECMO KOEI AMERICA Corp.
- Asphalt? 3D from UBISOFT
- Combat of Giants?: Dinosaurs 3D from UBISOFT
- Rayman? 3D from UBISOFT
- Tom Clancy?s Ghost Recon? Shadow Wars from UBISOFT

Nintendo 3DS also comes pre-loaded with a variety of fun games, applications and features, such as the Nintendo 3DS camera, which can be used to take photos in 2D and 3D as well as be used in other games and applications. For instance, the built-in Face Raiders? game asks users to shoot at funny depictions of their own photographed faces, while the Mii Maker? application lets gamers use the camera to take a picture of a person and have an automatic Mii? character created. The system also comes with six AR Cards, which, when viewed through the outer cameras, bring to life fun and interesting animations and images. For example, when used with nintendogs + cats, users might see their puppies or kittens sitting on their coffee tables or in the palms of their hands. With Nintendo 3DS Sound, users can enjoy sound-manipulation tools or rock out with their Nintendo 3DS system while listening to their MP3 or AAC music files.

Nintendo 3DS is also able to play nearly every game in the massive Nintendo DS library, except those that require use of a secondary Game Boy? Advance slot.

The 3DS goes on sale March 27, but until now Nintendo's been mum about what games will be accompanying its North American launch. That changed this morning, with the reveal of the complete launch lineup. In addition to first-party games Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, and Nintendogs + Cats, shoppers will have 15 more third-party games to choose from.

Here's the complete 18-game lineup:

•    Pilotwings Resort (Nintendo)
•    Steel Diver (Nintendo)
•    Nintendogs + Cats (Nintendo)
•    Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (Capcom)
•    The Sims 3 (EA)
•    Madden NFL Football (EA Sports)
•    Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D (Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.)
•    LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (LucasArts)
•    RIDGE RACER 3D (Namco Bandai)
•    Super Monkey Ball™ 3D (Sega)
•    BUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSE (Square-Enix, Inc.)
•    SAMURAI WARRIORS: Chronicles (Tecmo Koei)
•    Asphalt 3D (Ubisoft)
•    Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (Ubisoft)
•    Rayman 3D (Ubisoft)
•    Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (Ubisoft)

As you can see, Ubisoft is once again a strong backer of Nintendo at launch. The strategy certainly paid off for the company during the early days of the Wii. While other company's scrambled to release games on the system following its surprise success, Ubisoft was preparing its second wave of games. We'll have to wait and see if the 3DS will capture mainstream attention in the same way or if possibility of glasses-free 3D is a persuasive selling point for consumers.

Kate (foreground) enjoys hands-on time with the 3DS at a Nintendo press event in Vancouver. Mario (background) looks on.

At a media event at Nintendo?s offices in Vancouver this past week, I was given a demonstration of the company?s much-anticipated new 3D gaming handheld, followed by some free play time.

Yes! I?ve now tried the Nintendo 3DS. Dramatic pause.

I really like it. Though, my general fascination with new and interesting gizmos?my gadget-itis?is probably as much the basis for my positive reaction, as my love for video games.

Most of what I demoed on the 3DS felt, to me, more proof-of-concept, than complete piece of software.

That said, I love the concept, and at the end of it, came away feeling more favorably towards the 3DS than I expected to.

My favorite segment of the roughly 20 minute long guided tour centered around one of the more conceptual and techy features of the handled, the AR (Augmented Reality) programs that will be bundled with the 3DS, when it hits stores March 27.

These apps make use of the device?s built-in 3D cameras, and paper cards, which the player places on a flat surface, and offer simple game experiences, which use your physical environment as the playing field.

When its cameras ?see? an AR card, the 3DS loads a corresponding program, and its top screen begins to behave like the viewfinder of a camcorder, but with a couple of major differences: the view appears in 3D, and images and animations are superimposed onto the scene, in proximity to the card?hence the term ?augmented reality.? Dragons will pop out of your kitchen table, trees will sprout out of your placemats, and holes will appear, which you must lean forward to peer into, as you navigate the environment, crouching, leaning, or turning in your chair, in order to get a clean shot at targets, and to perform various other tasks.

The AR software appears to show glimpses of the 3DS?s potential to be used for some really creative outside-the-box development. Outside the box, 3D, get it?

How?s the 3D?

The 3D screen delivers a surprisingly rich 3D experience without glasses. As you play games, sharp, well-defined objects descend into, and jump out of the screen. Though, it?s a little more finicky than the 3D provided by the tandem of a new 3D television and a pair of active shutter 3D glasses?the 3DS requires players to keep their head, and the handheld, in the right position. In other words, the 3D goes away, if you move too much. But there is a ?depth slider? on the side of the device, which allows you to optimize the 3D effect somewhat, and it?s very much a ?real? three-dimensional image, comprised of images layered on top of each other, with perceptible depth between them.

The built-in cameras can also be used to take 3D photos, with objects closest to the camera appearing to protrude from the screen. Don?t get any ideas, you.

And what about its general merits, as a gaming handheld?

Time will tell, but my hunch is, it will more than satisfactorily service gamers. Attendees at the event got to try several games, some of which were early builds, and some of which appear ready to ship, and enough are feeling like complete gaming experiences, which also make good use of the technology.

Specifically, Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition and Pilotwings Resort were two standouts, doing a fine job of marrying impressive 3D imaging with gaming fun. With both, I really felt like I was playing games with 3D visuals, as opposed to demoing a piece of kit.

Graphics are also noticeably sharper than those on the DSi, Nintendo?s previous handheld. Street Fighter, in particular, delivered startlingly sharp visuals at a consistent frame rate.

The take-away: I?m impressed enough by what I?ve seen to recommend the 3DS, which will cost $249, particularly to anyone who identifies as a gadget freak. Also: you can use it to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. IN 3D.

Yes, yes I will be picking one up at launch._

What many people need to realize is back when Nintendo was at the top of their game, lets say...super Nintendo. The super Nintendo had many of our favorite games donkey Kongs,Zelda,Mario, star fox, earthbound,FFs,any many others but if you look at the list of super Nintendo games you will find that over 70% are either crappy or for casual gamers the very same can be said for their other systems. The wii had a great amount of hardcore(which by the way when I mean hardcore I mean games like zelda,DK ect) games last year though Nintendo games are still kid friendly but these are the kid friendly games that many of us grew up with and Nintendo is still doing the very same with 3ds,wii and  future console don't say that Nintendo lost it,they've had it,never lost it,sure they took a chance with the wii but it paid off.Just think if Nintendo went out of business because of that risk(though we all doubt it),And now the company is stronger than ever.Anyway I just wanted a lot of people to reconsider the wii.And I cannot wait to see my favorite Nintendo games in HD so keep on moving forward Nintendo please all types of gamers.

Nintendo has confirmed its launch day line-up of Nintendo 3DS games, an 18-strong list including Nintendogs + Cats, Steel Diver and Pilotwings Resort. Each will be priced at $39.99 – the 3DS itself will be $249.99 when it hits the US on March 27 – and Nintendo confirms that more than 30 new titles will follow in-between then and E3 2011 in June.

Nintendo’s offerings will include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart series. The bundled AR cards – six playing-cards with augmented reality glyphs – will work in different ways with the new 3DS games. For instance, Nintendogs + Cats will be able to spot the AR cards and map puppies onto your desktop.

Of course, there’s also backward compatibility with Nintendo’s DS library of titles, barring those that demand a secondary Game Boy Advance slot.

Last month Nintendo hosted events in Europe and America simultaneously, detailing the launch of the Nintendo 3DS in those regions. While Australia usually aligns with PAL markets, details on the Australian launch of the device were noticeably absent from the briefings.

That all changed last night at the official unveiling of the Nintendo 3DS. Being released on 31 March, Nintendo's stereoscopic handheld console will be available for AU$349.95 and will be released alongside several launch titles. Games that will be available on day one include Nintendogs + Cats, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Ridge Racer, Lego Star Wars III, The Sims 3, Pro Evo Soccer and more.

When it launches on 31 March 2011, the Nintendo 3DS will be available in two different colour variations: Aqua Blue and Cosmic Black.

In Nintendo's home country of Japan, the Nintendo 3DS retails for ?25,000, while it will sell for US$250 in the United States and ?229 in the UK.

The Nintendo 3DS is coming to the United States on March 27 for $250. We've known that for a while, but today Nintendo has released the official list of launch titles, which will be sold for $40 each. Too much?

The list is made up of familiar names and faces, along with ports of older games. While it likely won't make a difference in sales, Nintendo's strategy of using the past to sell the future is certainly interesting. Let's take a look at what you'll be able to play on your shiny new system.

Nintendo published games

Pilotwings Resort™, an aerial adventure featuring airplanes, hang gliders and rocket belts. Players soar above tropical Wuhu Island in 3D as they complete missions or snap pictures.Steel Diver™, a submarine game that involves strategy and combat. The 3D visuals give players the sensation that they are looking into a miniature aquarium as they control the sub's speed, depth and pitch, and fire torpedoes.nintendogs™ + cats, a game that lets players interact with realistic puppies—and kittens—in a variety of fun ways. There are three versions of the software, each with different starting breeds: French bulldog, toy poodle and golden retriever. But in each version players can unlock and enjoy more than 20 different breeds.

Third-party published games

Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition from CAPCOMThe Sims™ 3 from EAMadden NFL Football from EA SPORTSPro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™RIDGE RACER® 3D from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.Super Monkey Ball™ 3D from SEGABUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSE™ from Square-Enix, Inc.SAMURAI WARRIORS®: Chronicles from TECMO KOEI AMERICA Corp.Asphalt™ 3D from UBISOFTCombat of Giants™: Dinosaurs 3D from UBISOFTRayman® 3D from UBISOFTTom Clancy's Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars from UBISOFT

Pilotwings Resort uses the 3D effect to really bring the flying "sim" to life, and we had plenty of positive things to say about Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Rayman 3D is a reboot of the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2, the wonderful title that brought the armless and legless hero into 3D gaming. It's a good fit for the system, and a game that's going to be fun to revisit.

The rest of the list is the expected mess of big-name franchises and whatever the publisher could get ready in time. We'll be on the lookout for sleeper hits, but expectations are low.

Nintendo also stated that "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart series" will be coming in 2011.

The $40 price point isn't really a surprise, and you may be able to find some releases at some retailers for $35 or lower, but with portable gaming on smartphones gaining traction with sub-$5 releases, this may not be the time to be skewing higher with prices. Of course, the system itself is $250, so this isn't really the device for anyone just scraping by. Anecdotally, my son just asked if we'd be getting a 3DS, so the 9 year-old crowd is talking about it, something that can't be said for the NGP.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the pricing and game list, so comment away.

Nintendo has revealed a full launch list of 18 games for its new Nintendo 3DS handheld. All will retail for $39.99

Nintendo has revealed the complete North American launch lineup for the Nintendo 3DS, its new 3D, dual-screened, touch-based gaming handheld. The system will hit North American shelves on March 27 for $249.99. Lead by Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, and Nintendogs + Cats, all games will launch at $39.99. By June, Nintendo expects more than 30 games will be available for the 3DS.

Here is the full 3DS launch list:

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, CapcomThe Sims 3, Electronic ArtsMadden NFL Football, Electronic ArtsPro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D, KonamiLego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, LucasArtsRidge Racer 3D, Namco BandaiSuper Monkey Ball 3D, SegaBust-a-Move Universe, Square-EnixSamurai Warriors: Chronicles, Tecmo KoeiAsphalt 3D, UbisoftCombat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D, UbisoftRayman 3D, UbisoftTom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, UbisoftPilotwings Resort, NintendoSteel Diver, NintendoNintendogs + Cats, Nintendo

(The 3DS comes preloaded with a Mii Maker app, Face Raiders photo game, and some other small minigames.)

Interestingly, just as Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has hinted at, the launch lineup looks very male oriented, filled with action oriented titles. Nintendo may be trying to target a new demographic with the 3DS. By holding back on some of its upcoming games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Mario Kart, it is also giving third-party publishers some breathing room on launch day. Also notable is the strong support Ubisoft has given the 3DS. As it did with the Wii and other recent consoles, Ubisoft is heavily supporting the 3DS, releasing four games at launch, which is more than Nintendo itself is committing.

What do you think of the Nintendo 3DS launch lineup? It’s pretty varied for a Nintendo system, we think. Does Nintendo need a Mario game to launch its hardware properly?
